Review: Lean Kitchen Co.

If you are like me, some days, maybe most days, you forget to plan your healthier meal options for the week. Whether you make your own or plan where you will eat in advance, or order in your meals, let’s face it. Some of us just plain forget to do any of it.

Normally, it’s a Sunday when I prep a few lunches, but alas, another weekend came and went, and I did not prep a single thing.

Thankfully, we were in the city on Sunday and I had a little extra time to kill before we drove the hour and a half home.

We met up with some new friends at Castlewood State Park in Ballwin, MO for a short, late November hike. It’s a fairly easy, 3ish mile, hike for anyone looking for a relaxing way to increase their activity!

I opened my google map app and typed in “Meal Prep Services.” Several popped up. Some were already closed, being a little later on a Sunday evening. I saw Lean Kitchen Co. and knew it was on my list to try. I had a friend in KC that has posted many times about this company, so I thought I would give it a go.

I really like the stores where I can run in and see the meals for myself. The places where you can only order online, I have yet to order from. I struggle with any type of online shopping, though. Most people, I’m sure, could easily order from their site! Which, also, they do offer delivery in some areas, so if that’s something you need, be sure to check it out!

Walking in, I was immediately caught off guard with the with the amount of meals to choose from. Not as much as I expected. There were 3 fridges but not a lot on the shelves. However, all the available options sounded and looked amazing! The shelves being a bit bare could’ve easily been because it was close to the end of the day, or maybe because people tend to order online more than they do walking in.

I chose 2 meals and a snack/dessert to try out. Meatball Mac & Cheese, Buffalo Chicken Ranch Cauliflower, and some Protein donuts!

These prices are about average for the meal prep services I have been looking at. There is only one that I have seen (and tried) that has meals in the $5/6/7/8 range. I still need to get a review up on that one too. I’m slacking….

I worked from home yesterday. Honestly, it is much harder for me to stay on track when working form home than it is for me to run out on my lunch break when I’m actually in the office. My cabinets and fridge are stocked and it’s so easy to just grab something and head back to my couch to start nibbling.

Meatball Mac & Cheese (475 Cals | 28g Protein | 23g Carbs | 30g Fat) with a side of Broccoli is what I tried first. The BBQ sauce surprised me, although, it made sense because it certainly did not look like marinara. It was so good! The meatballs were juicy and could easily be sliced up with my fork. Perfect sauce to meat ratio. The mac & cheese were cooked just right. Not al dente and not too mushy. The broccoli had a slight “smoked” flavor to it.

My normal breakfast is a Vegan Chocolate protein shake from IdealFit that I mix with vanilla almond milk. But of course, I had to try the protein donuts (223 Cals | 10g Protein | 28g Carbs | 9g Fat)! For my mid-morning snack, I sliced a quartered a donut and gave it a go. They are SWEET! Too much for me to eat all in one sitting, however, a few bites was a perfect sweet tooth snack!

My guy and I work for the same company. So we typically grab food and eat in the car together. Either we go over schedules, talk about our mornings, or watch some Hulu/Netflix for an hour. I ate my Buffalo and Ranch Cauliflower meal (275 Cal | 37g Protein | 3g Carbs | 13g Fat ) while we watched Tiger King 2. I was delighted with the taste! I couldn’t see it in store, so I had to ask, but there is chicken in it even though the name on the label doesn’t state it. I am a big cauliflower rice fan and I can say I never thought about mixing cauliflower rice with buffalo chicken. For me personally, there wasn’t enough food with this meal. I knew that packing my meals this morning, so I also at the strawberries and peppers with ranch that I packed. It all ended up being just the right amount.

Overall, I would give Lean Kitchen Co. an 8/10. The taste is great, the convenience for me being able to walk right in and grab what I wanted is super helpful, and the prices are comparable to other sites. My only complaint is that there is not a greater variety of meals to choose from.
